돔스데이는 GMT게임즈가 개발한 코인시리즈를 영국 노르만 정복에 맞춘 보드게임이다. 플레이어는 노르만, 색슨, 바이킹, 스코틀랜드/웰시 파벌을 통제하고 이벤트, 명령, 특수 능력을 사용하여 지도에 지도와 피스를 배치하고 이동시켜 지역을 통제하고 지지를 얻으며 승리를 쟁취한다.

참회왕 에드워드는 1042년 노르망디에서 수십 년간 바이킹의 지배를 받은 후 영국의 왕이 되기 위해 돌아왔다. 노르웨이의 망누스 1세도 왕위를 주장하며 전쟁을 위협했지만, 자식이 없는 에드워드는 그를 후계자로 삼겠다고 약속하며 만류했다. 에드워드는 덴마크의 스베인 에스트리드손, 노르망디의 윌리엄, 해럴드 고드윈슨에게도 같은 약속을 했다. 1066년 그가 죽었을 때, 네 명의 강력한 군벌들이 자신의 정당한 후계자라고 주장했다. 좋게 끝나지 않을 것이다.

Domesday is a board game that adapts the COIN Series developed by GMT Games to the Norman Conquest of England. Players control the Norman, Saxon, Viking, and Scots/Welsh Factions and use Events, Commands and Special Abilities to place and move leaders and pieces on the map to control areas, gain support, and win victory.

Edward the Confessor returned from exile in Normandy after decades of Viking rule in 1042 to become king of England. Magnus the Good of Norway also claimed the throne, and threatened war, but was dissuaded by the childless Edward, who promised to make him his heir. Edward gave the same promise to Sweyn Estridsson of Denmark, William of Normandy, and Harold Godwinson. When he died in 1066 four powerful warlords claimed to be his rightful heir. It would not end well.

NORMANS are the most powerful faction, led by William the Conqueror and his three warlike sons Robert Curthose, William Rufus, and Henry Beauclerc. Archbishop Stigand of Canterbury had been excommunicated by five successive popes for pluralism (he was also Bishop of Winchester), a situation not improved by his being confirmed by the Anti-Pope Benedict IX. The English, Scottish and Welsh Churches had doctrinal differences with Rome, so Pope Alexander II blessed William’s invasion and appointed Lanfranc to Canterbury to reform the church. The Normans have well-armoured knights and mercenary troops which give them a distinct advantage on the battlefield, built strong castles to control the countryside, and raised mighty cathedrals to please the church. They must conquer and pacify the county to win, but the number of areas they need for victory increases as the game progresses.

SAXONS begin the game in control of England but are the target of every other faction. Harold Godwinson can win a quick victory if they can repel the Norman and Viking invasions. If not, they must keep the support of the people, and fight a guerrilla war against the invaders with Hereward the Wake, Eadric the Wild, and Edgar Ætheling.

VIKINGS settled across England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, and Mann in the previous 200 years. King Hardicanute’s death ended their control in 1042, but the re-conquest of England was not impossible. The Danelaw of north-east England still had its own laws, language, customs, and help from their brethren overseas. Harald Hardrada inherited the claims of Magnus the Good and invaded in 1066, followed by Sweyn Estridsson in 1069-70, Canute Sweynson in 1074-75, and Magnus Barefoot in 1098-1103. No real conquest was attempted as they raided the coast, and sacked monasteries and towns before returning home. The Vikings may win by retaking the Viking Kingdom of York or amassing plunder.

SCOTS Malcolm Canmore made himself King of the Scots after killing Macbeth in 1057. He expanded his kingdom south into Lothian, Strathclyde, and Cumbria, but failed to take Northumbria. He allied himself to the Saxons, marrying Margaret of Wessex in 1070 and helping her brother Edgar Ætheling, but was killed on a raid in 1093 and Scotland fell into chaos as his brother Donald the Fair fought Malcolm’s sons Duncan and Edgar for the throne.

WELSH Bleddyn ap Cynfyn was the only man recognised as King of Wales. An ally of Harold Godwinson, he helped Eadric the Wild fight the Normans, but his death in 1075 split Wales into petty feuding kingdoms, whose rulers invited Norman and Norse-Irish mercenaries to fight each other. It was only when Gruffydd ap Cynan escaped from Norman captivity that the Welsh truly began centuries of resistance. Combined with the Scots they can win by uniting their kingdoms and resisting invasion.

Cards are drawn from the deck one at time, with one card in play and the following card face up on top of the deck. Each Event card shows the order in which Eligible Factions may choose to resolve the Event or one of their own Commands, sometimes with one of their Special Abilities. Resolving an Event or Command makes the Faction Ineligible for the next card. Crown Events interrupt play as a King is coronated, Victory is determined, Revenue is collected, and Support is expanded.
