Temperance is played with a standard 78-card Tarot deck. Place Minor Arcana (water) cards beneath either one of the Major Arcana (chalice) cards, "filling" the chalice by totaling the value of the water cards until they are equal to the value of the chalice cards. Cards in the Suit of Cups can have a positive or negative value. Cards in the other suits only have a positive value. When a chalice card is filled, the Temperance card is moved to the other chalice, which indicates that this new chalice is the target chalice. A player is not required to fill the target chalice, but it is advantageous to the player to do so. In this way, the player should go back and forth between the two chalices, filling one chalice and then the next.

The player is aided by the Temperance card, which has two special abilities, as long as it is active:

The player may clear the target card by reaching Temperance\'s value, 14.
The player may move up to two cards in play to a different chalice.


The Temperance card becomes inactive whenever its ability is used, or whenever the non-target chalice is filled.

A player can activate the Temperance card by either 1) filling a target chalice, 2) discarding one of the four court cards from hand, or 3) adding another chalice to the chalice deck.

To win, fill all chalice cards before the water deck runs out.
