Last night my opponent in a two player game was making a lot of money trading coffee. To counter this, I started producing a single barrel of coffee to ship, thereby forcing her to ship her coffee, rather than make money on it.
So the question came up if she had to put her barrels of coffee on the coffee ship when I selected the Captain. She thought she could ship her corn on another ship and be done with the phase. Page 6 under "Loading/shipping rules: A player cannot hold back goods when there is space on a ship carrying the kind of goods he has."
Am I interpreting that correctly? It tells me that if I Captain, and place my single barrel of coffee on a ship, even if she has corn and sugar, she must place all her barrels of coffee on my coffee ship. On other turns in that same phase she will ship her other goods if possible.
I thought this was obvious, but she disputes my interpretation, and reading through some comments here, I'm beginning to wonder if I have it wrong.
Thanks for your help!

You are correct. During the shipping phase, each player in turn MUST ship one kind of good, and this continues (multiple rounds if need be) until no one can possibly ship any more. Even if a player can no longer ship, that player "passes" while the other player(s) ship(s) remaining goods.
This is completely different from the trading phase, which is both voluntary, and only activates once for each player. (No trading 4 coffee in one turn, even if you have the office...)

The Captain phase (uniquely) goes around the table as many times as necessary until no one can ship any more. When it comes around to you, you must choose a type of good. It must be a type you can ship at least one barrel of. Once you have chosen the type of good, you must ship as many barrels as you can. Then it goes on to the next person. When it comes around to you again, you repeat the process.
If when it comes around to you, you cannot ship any barrels, you pass. Once everyone is forced to pass, the shipping is done and you empty full boats and discard excess barrels.

Hi people,
this does not exactly meet the original question but since there seem to be some doubts on the captain rules I'd like to complete your previous postings. Here is the rule you did not discuss so far:
If, during the captain phase, it is your turn you
* First pick an arbitrary ware of which you could ship at least one stone. No constraints on that.
* Given the ware, if there is not yet a ship for that type, you may have the opportunity to choose between several empty ships.
But: You must ship the maximum possible number of stones.
Example: You own 7 corn and decide to ship corn.
There are empty 6,7 and 8 spaced ships.
In that case you must choose either the 7 or the 8 spaced one.
Friendly regards, Markus.

Is it only possible to put your barrels into the warehouse during the captains phase?(if that is so, all barrels except one will be lost if the captain card doesn`t get picked). ???

I'm not sure what you mean by the paranthetical statement, but the warehouse works like this: after a Captain phase has been completely each player may only keep ONE barrel that they were not able to ship, period. Everything else must be "thrown out." However if a player has a small warehouse that player may hold on to EVERY barrel of one type in *addition* to the one barrel (presumably of something else). A large warehouse works the same way except the player may save every barrel of TWO types of goods in addition to one standard barrel, and a player with both warehouses gets the combined effect of saving THREE types of product from being thrown out.
You never actually "place" any barrels into the warehouse. The warehouse only allows you to keep barrels of product that you would have otherwise needed to throw out at the *end* of the Captain Phase.

I think you might be confused here. You only have to get rid of any extra barrels besides one at the end of the Captain's phase, not the end of the round.

Wharf
