말란은 영국 공방전에서 18킬을 기록하고 영국 공군의 전술 혁신을 도운 처칠의 원조 '열혈' 중 한 명이었다. 1937년 말란은 상선 해군에 입대하기 전에 '세일러'라는 별명을 얻었고, 전쟁 내내 그와 함께 했다. 훌륭한 전술가였던 그의 전쟁 말기 집계는 27대의 적기였다.

Malan was one of Churchill's original 'few' who fought the Luftwaffe to a standstill during the Battle of Britain where he scored 18 kills and helped revolutionize RAF tactics. Before joining up in 1937 Malan had served in the merchant Navy gaining the 'Sailor' nickname which stuck with him throughout the war. A fine tactician, his war end tally was 27 enemy aircraft.
