"EDEL, STEIN & REICH – 2 PLAYER OFFICIAL VARIANT
This variant is translated from the Alea website.
All rules not specifically modified herein remain the same as in the original multi-player game.
Ten gem cards are set aside face-down in a pile. One player begins – play continues with the players taking turns. Whoever’s turn it is (the ‘active player’) reveals the first gem card and places it in front of them. Then, the active player reveals the top event card as well. The active player must then decide which action card (money, event of gem) he/she wishes to play and plays it face-down. The opposing player must now attempt to hinder the active player’s plans – for example, to at least force a trade. To that end, the opposing player chooses one of their three action cards and plays it face-up.
There are now two possibilities:
1) The opposing player has ‘tagged’ the active player by choosing the same action card. In this case, the active player must reveal his/her card and the action is not carried out.
2) The opposing player has ‘missed’. The active player may not reveal their action card at this time – they simply let the other player know that their pick still stands.
Then, the opposing player chooses one of their remaining two action cards and plays it face up. Once again there are two possibilities:
1) The opposing player has now chosen correctly and ‘tagged’ the active player. Both players must now barter and trade for the right to carry out the action. This occurs in much the same way as usual: Whoever has the least red stones makes the first offer and whoever chooses to accept the offer gives the action up to the other player.
2) If the opposing player has ‘missed’ again, then the active player may carry out their chosen action for free.
Thus, the opposing player gets two tries: If they are successful on their first try, they get to wipe out the action entirely. If they are successful on their second try, they get to force a trade and possibly get to carry out the action for themselves.
Now, the players switch roles and carry out the sequence above out again. Note that, as in the usual rules, a new event card is always revealed. Should the old event card have gone unselected, it is replaced at the bottom of the event card pile. In this fashion, the game carries on until the 10 gem cards are used up. At that point, the first round is over (as in the regular game) and scoring occurs.
Players then continue through the next two rounds, each time choosing 10 gem cards at random and making a face-down pile. The active player for the start of the second or third rounds is the player with the most money (or gems, if there is a tie). Whoever has the most money at the end of the game is the winner."
